| 'What
I like about the women in the Bible is that they will not let
themselves become victims. They use the weapons they have - weapons
quite different to men's - to get what they want. Now of course, the
men fight back by criticizing them, saying things like 'beauty is a
trap', 'women are full of guile', etc. Fighting back is only to be
expected - I would do the same if I were a man. Women in the Bible use whatever they can - beauty in the case of Esther, Tamar's sheer animal cunning, her status in the case of Sarah. People only criticize what they fear. We are all trying to maintain our power positions - be they ever so humble! I don't know how this works itself out, I don't really understand, but I trust God enough to believe that all of this is an expression of God's plan for human beings. I believe that God's plan is like an unfolding flower - we don't see all of it at once, but it is happening to a pattern even without our knowing. (You can tell I am a gardener!!) So yes, God is using us, but not like a puppeteer uses puppets, more like a gardener planting a seed and then watching the plant grow - looking after it and propping it up from time to time, but letting it grow to its own pattern.' |
